    May Ross

    1784

    No10th May 28th 1784

May Ross at 30 complains of great lassitude & debility & an entire aversion to all manner of action & exertion. These symptoms are attended with headache & vertigo. She is affected also with pain in her lower extremities, which are preternaturally swollen.

Her legs & thighs are much swelled through the day but upon going to bed they diminish much in size by the next morning.

Her legs do not pit on pressure & are covered with numerous varicose veins some of which rise in tumours painful to the touch.

She complains likewise of great thirst. Pulse below the natural standard. Belly very costive

Urine high coloured & at the [same] time scanty, & deposits a red sediment. menses have not appeared for these three months past.

She was first attacked with these symptoms about three months ago & dates the whole of them from the suppression of the menstrual discharge as to this the others supervened in succession

The suppression of the menstrual discharge she attributes to cold to which she was exposed at the natural period but numerous varicose veins in her legs were observable at a much earlier date. Since the menses ceased however the affection of her legs as well as all the other symptoms have been much aggravated.

She has used no medicines with any benefit.

June 5 Both the doses of her powder operated well. But she does not perceive any increase of the quantity of her urine from the mixture. She is still much affected with the pain in different parts of her body but thinks the swelling of her legs somewhat diminished, although the varicose veins continue much as before.
