    Henry Bruce

    1784

    No4 May 7th 1784

Henry Bruce at 24 a labourer, complains of great debility attended with troublesome cough & severe headache. Has also a pain of his breast which is much aggravated on coughing.

The headache continues through the day but in the morning it is most troublesome particularly when he endeavours to get up. He is then affected with such vertigo as renders him incapable of standing for any length of time. He sleeps badly & about five o’Clock in the morning a profuse sweating comes on, which generally continues till eight o’Clock.

Belly rather bound. Pulse 120. Appetite bad.

The above complaint commenced on Sunday last. In the morning of that day he was first attacked with a severe & disagreeable pain of his right side under the false ribs. This remained violent till the evening, when it was much alleviated by a profuse discharge of blood from the mouth. At night however when the discharge from the breast had abated he found the pain removed from his right side into his head, & the headache is now much increased

On Monday & Tuesday last a fresh discharge supervened & was accompanied with similar symptoms as at the first attack. He thinks that the symptoms in general are much aggravated since the first appearance. He imagines that the pain of his side was occasioned by lifting a heavy load of earth. But he knows no other cause, whatever that could have contributed to the above complaints.

    He has used no medicines.
