    Mary McFarlane

    1784

    No1st May 1st 1784

Mary McFarlane at 22 married but has had no children discharges by the anus every day about ten or twelve worms they are of a white colour & flat shape, about two tenths of an inch in breadth, & from a quarter of an inch to half an inch in length. They are of uniform breadth through their whole length & evidently appear to be distinct joints of the Taenia.

She complains also of being affected with severe pain, sometimes in the region of the stomach sometimes under the false ribs particularly of the left side

Her belly is tense & often much distended & she is frequently affected with a troublesome itching of the nose. Her eyes are dull & heavy but her complexion is to appearance very healthy.

Appetite good, Pulse heat & respiration natural. Tongue rather dry & parched but she seldom complains of Thirst.

Belly regular but her faeces have a particularly white appearance.

Before marriage she was frequently troubled with Fluor albus, which however has since left her.

Her present complaints are of several months standing & it is now five months since she first observed the discharge of worms. She knows no cause to which her complaints can be attributed, & she has taken several medicines without deriving any benefit from them.

May 5. Took her medicines as directed, but discharged no fragments of the worm during the use of the cathartic [which] operated briskly. She has however passed many fragments yesterday.

May 7. She had severe sickness from the Pulvis filicis & after taking two spoonfuls of the Electuary a brisk catharsis ensued, during which she discharged about five yards of the taenia, in two fragments the one is considerably narrower than the other, but does not terminate in any proper filum.

Since these large portions of the Taenia were discharged, she has not observed any farther discharge of the Taenia in the way of single joints as formerly.

May 14th. Had considerable sickness from the Pulvis Filicis & after she began the cathartic she was attacked first with severe vomiting & afterwards with violent looseness. But no fragments of the Taenia were observed to be discharged, nor has she seen the least appearance of it since the large fragments came away which were mentioned in the last report.
