Henrietta Kid at 23. Is at every menstrual period affected with severe pains in her back & breast attended with considerable swelling of the Mammae & great sickness at stomach. The discharge in place of being of the natural colour & quantity consists entirely of a serous fluid of a greenish colour & is very scanty. But the discharge is not followed by any scalding of the parts or ardor urinae. After it has continued for about two days it gradually ceases & the other symptoms by degrees diminish. The discharge returns regularly every four weeks & is preceded for a day or two by the swelling of the Mammae. During the intervals between periods, she is affected with flying pains through different parts of her body, particularly in her breast & she complains much of loss of strength. Appetite natural, tongue moist, Pulse 80, Respiration in general free but at times laborious She complains of unusual thirst. Belly bound. Urine rather scanty & [depositing] a considerable sediment. The affection of the menstrual discharge began about five years ago. but left her in a few months after upon her becoming pregnant & she had no return of it as long as she suckled her child which died when six months old during that time her menses were not absent. Upon the death of her child her symptoms again returned & have since that time been gradually increasing in severity. Her husband has been [absent] ever since the death of that child & she never had a second. She attributes her complaints to grief & has used several medicines without any benefit. Cap. om. n. Pil. Aloet gr V November 15. The pills have in general given her two loose stools every day. The menstrual discharge appeared on Monday last & was as usual preceded & pain of the breast & swelling of the Mammae, it was very scanty in point of quantity. But she thinks it was rather more of the natural colour. Appetite much impaired. Pulse 98. Contin. Pil. Aloet. sed cap. Pil. i. altern quag. nocte solumud nec non Cap. bis indies Pulv. Cort Peruv. ℥p. November 22d She thinks the affection of her breast somewhat diminished since she began the use of the powders, but the pills have not now the effect of exciting looseness. Belly rather bound, Pulse 88 Appetite somewhat mended. Cont. Pulv. Cort Peruv. u. a. & cap. Pil. Aloet gr V om n. November 29 The pains of her breast & belly are considerably easier She had some looseness for two days, last week But since that her belly has been rather bound. Cont. Pulv. Cort. Peruv. & Pil. Aloet. u. a. December 6th. Has been affected with febrile paroxysms for some days past, attended with some cough. Interm. med. & cap Pulv. Ipecac gr XV pro. Emet. nec non sumat Mist.
