November 8th 1782. Number 6.
John Anderson at 56. complains of severe pain & great stiffness in the muscles of the head neck & shoulders. He complains particularly of soreness in his eyes & throat. The parts affected have no appearance of inflammation & are not sensible of increased pain or soreness when touched. He opens his jaws with some difficulty & is able to swallow very little. Pulse 68 of natural strength Tongue whitish, belly regular, appetite good, no thirst. The pain began below his right ear four days ago on exposure to cold from harvest work. He is not conscious of having received any external injury. Habeat Bals. Anod. [gr]. ut conferantur partes affectae omni nova urgen doloris venementia. November 8th The affection is somewhat diminished since he used the anodyne balsam, but is still so painful in the night as to prevent him from sleeping & he has scarcely slept any these three nights Cont. Bals. Anod & cap. Opii puriss gr. i. om. n. 16. The first pill that he took gave him considerable relief so that he slept tolerably well during the night. From the second his pain was still farther diminished & after he had taken the third, it seemed to be altogether removed since which he has had no return of it & has continued in every other respect in good health & engaged himself in country work. Intermit Medicine November 23d. Continues free from complaint. Dismissed cured.
