John Reid at 35 of a dark complexion & a habit somewhat emaciated, complains of severe cough dyspnoea & pain of breast. He has considerable hoarseness & expectorates with difficulty a greenish matter of a disagreeable sweetish taste. On coughing a dull pain strikes from his breast to his left loin. When the cough is most severe, he sweats considerably but has no cold or hot fits. Pulse about 80 & feeble. Tongue very red, some flushing of the cheeks, Respiration very quick & laborious. He is often very thirsty & sleeps very ill owing to the severity of the cough. Belly regular. These complaints began about the end of July after exposure to cold when his body was heated by hard labour. He has formerly been subjected to Catarrhs, but was never before troubled with pain of breast. He has followed the occupation of a rope maker near twenty years. He has taken Turnip syrup & some other domestic prescriptions without relief. October 17th Rx. Pulv. G. Myrrh. Ji. Pulv. Crem Tart. ℥i.M. cap. dos om. m. November 8th Since admission he has taken his medicines regularly. He is now so weak that he is unable to walk from Leith the place of his residence. Cough & Expectoration as before. Cont. Medic. u. a
