    Ann Stokes

    1782

    November 8th 1782.

Ann Stokes at 18 of a fair complexion & spare habit is affected with fits which occur at no particular period, & without any previous warning. On their accession she suddenly falls down. her whole body is convulsed, her eyes fixed, she bites her tongue, foams at the mouth & is perfectly insensible during their continuance, which is generally about a quarter of an hour. She is sometimes free from them for a fortnight, sometimes they attack her five or six times in 24 hours. After the recovery of her senses she becomes for some time quite motionless.

Pulse at present 86, Appetite bad, belly costive. menses regular but scanty.

Her affection is of three years & a half duration, & was induced by a fright.

She has been a patient at the Dispensary for this complaint since the beginning of April & has used many medicines, particularly the Cuprum Ammoniacum, Calx Zinci & Peruvian Bark.

During her attendance her affection has continued much in the same state, as at admission, only her fits have been observed to be most frequent & most severe at the periods of the menstrual discharge.
