Commenting upon the publication of the Scottish Government’s winter guidance, Prof Derek Bell said:

“The RCPE welcomes the early publication of the Scottish Government’s guidance on winter 2015/16.

“We know that medical staff face additional challenges in the winter months and planning ahead is as vital as learning from the experiences of previous winters.

“Safe staffing levels need to be implemented alongside adequate bed capacity to ensure we meet the increased demands that winter brings.  Equally, effective workforce planning will ensure that trainee doctors continue to undergo the training they require to deliver quality patient care during these times.

“The College would be happy to work with the Health Boards on the determination of safe staffing requirements.”
