Commenting on the publication of the reviews into patient care in NHS Grampian [1], Prof Derek Bell, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh [2], said,

“The reviews published today raise serious issues which must be urgently addressed.

“The findings of the review of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary particularly emphasise the importance of medical leadership, and managers and clinicians must work together to ensure that leadership and professionalism are at the heart of our hospitals.

“It is apparent that the current managerial system is not fit for purpose and in order to move forward, the recommendations in the reviews should be implemented and absorbed as a matter of urgency. The voice of staff and patients must be heard, and it is vital that staff of all grades work as part of a valued team, rather than being seen as cogs in a wheel. The College is keen to enter into dialogue on how support can be improved to all Fellows and Members at every career stage, working with organisations such as the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management [3].

“Only by making these cultural changes and prioritising medical leadership will we make NHS Scotland an employer of choice and ensure high quality health care for all.”
