Commenting upon the Advocate General’s opinion on Minimum Unit Pricing (MUP) announced today, Prof Derek Bell, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, said:

“We are all too aware of the harm that excessive alcohol consumption can cause and the collateral impact that it can have not only on individuals, but on their families, communities and the health service.

“The evidence is clear: MUP can help reduce the mortality rates associated with alcohol by targeting those products that cause the most harm.

“The RCPE firmly believes that MUP is the most effective public health measure to reduce this harm in our society and today’s opinion from the Advocate General is a welcome step towards the implementation of MUP.

“With increasing rates of alcohol-related deaths and alcohol consumption, we will continue to support MUP as we await the European Court of Justice’s final decision.”
