In this issue we have not been shy of addressing some controversial issues. Dancer and Duerden take opposing views on the loss of the traditional physician’s white coat. Has this had a positive effect on infection control or has it harmed the doctor-patient relationship? In both the lay and the medical press, the pharmaceutical industry has received a lot of scrutiny, much of it hostile. Hardman discusses how the industry has addressed some of these criticisms.
In issue 2 we published papers relating to medical treatment during the First World War. We continue that theme in this issue but focus on women’s contribution to the care of soldiers. Both papers detail the numerous struggles female doctors had to overcome to try and receive recognition for their very considerable efforts.
Susan Laurence has decided to step down from the role of Editorial Assistant, a post she has held since 2000. I am the fifth editor-in-chief to have benefited from her support and in particular her knowledge of the Fellows and their interests. She continues to serve the College as Grants/Awards and Senior Fellows’ Club Administrator. This is an opportune time to remind younger readers of the annual Senior Fellows’ Club Prize for the best paper published in the JRCPE by a Collegiate or Associate member – see p315.
