NHS Improvement/Care Quality Commission

NHS Improvement/Care Quality Commission consultation on proposals for how NHS trusts and foundation trusts can make effective use of resources, leadership and governance enabling them to provide sustainable high quality services for patients.

NHS Improvement is working with the Care Quality Commission to further align their approaches to overseeing trusts and understanding where support is needed. This draft framework seeks the views of trusts and other interested stakeholders on a new assessment of the use of resources and the new well-led framework.

The College response suggests that it may be more productive to separate the assessment and mentoring/supportive roles, for example, allowing the Care Quality Commission to undertake the assessment and NHS Improvement to undertake the mentoring and support.

Each Trust inputs, stores, and outputs clinical operational data in different ways, using different systems. This sometimes leads to inaccuracies and so efficiency and resource calculations based on this data need to be approached with caution.
