Paul Kelly was brought up in Cumbria, then educated in Oxford and at The London Hospital. He became a member of RCPE in 1989 and fellow in 2001; he is clinically active in the UK and in Zambia, where he holds an honorary appointment in the University of Zambia School of Medicine.

Professor Kelly has also published over 120 research articles related to various aspects of gastroenterology in the tropics in adults and children. His work includes several trials of treatment for cryptosporidiosis and nutritional approaches to environmental enteropathy.

His research interests also encompass gastric malignancies, hepatitis B and portal hypertension related to schistosomiasis.
