The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh is seeking to appoint an experienced and dynamic individual to lead the Global Engagement function. The role will encompass leadership of a number of teams:

  • Communication, Marketing & Design
  • Policy & Public Affairs
  • Quality Research & Standards
  • Membership
  • Quality Governance
  • Library & Heritage
  • Journal teams.

Global Engagement is a newly created department resulting from the merger of a number of smaller departments. The Head of Global Engagement will be responsible for ~ 20 people.

This is a unique opportunity to lead colleagues across a number of important areas of the College’s work and the successful candidate will drive forward two of the College’s strategic aims: to be the voice of physicians; and to build an inclusive and collaborative global community that supports physicians across all stages of their careers, furthering our network of Fellows and Members (F&Ms).

The Head of Global Engagement will provide strategic and operational leadership of the Department and will report directly to the Chief Executive.

 

The Role

The main responsibilities of the role:

  • Overall responsibility and leadership of the College’s communications strategy and plan, promoting the College and actively contributing to the broader business objectives.
  • Hold budgetary responsibility for all Library & Heritage activities, including staffing and volunteers.
  • Work with Officer Bearers to develop suitable strategies and implementation plans, including exhibitions, conservation and collection development projects.
  • Hold budgetary responsibility for production of the College Journal, including staffing and out-sourced publishing activities and contracts
  • Lead and develop the strategy for the Quality Governance Collaborative.
  • Oversee the current Quality Governance fellowships and develop future fellowships, including WHO and other collaborations.
  • Engagement with stakeholders in Scotland, UK and internationally on governance issues.
  • Lead / contribute to invited service reviews (including audit and quality reviews) along with the Clinical Lead.
  • Lead the development of appropriate strategy and implementation plans with office bearers.
  • To advise the President, CEO and Honorary Secretary on continuing compliance with the provisions of the College Royal Charter and College Laws (requiring regular liaison with the College lawyers).
  • To increase recruitment of all categories of Fellows and Members.       

 

The Person

The post holder will require the following:

  • Educated to degree level, ideally in a communications, marketing or business related discipline, together with extensive post qualification experience (or equivalent).
  • Experience and expertise in the strategic development and delivery of competitive marketing and communication strategies for an organisation with multiple stakeholders and audiences and a global reach.
  • Knowledge of UK wide health policy preferable but not essential.
  • Demonstrable success in achieving targets, including financial targets.
  • Decision making skills, with evidence of taking difficult decisions and evidencing reasoning.
  • Good written and verbal communication and presentational skills with the proven ability to influence and persuade senior professional staff.
  • Understanding of the medical – political dimensions facing Royal Colleges generally.
  • Effective people management skills.
  • Motivational skills to encourage performance and productivity from their teams.
  • A track record of delivering successful internal and external communications, ideally for a membership organisation.
  • The post holder must be a positive advocate for the College as a professional association and promote the wider role of the College for professionals and the public.

 

Remuneration Package

The salary for this role will be £63,880 per annum plus benefits.  Additional benefits include:
