Responding to the publication of the Scottish Government’s consultation, ‘A Healthier Future - Actions and Ambitions on Diet, Activity and Healthy Weight’, Professor Derek Bell, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, said:

“We welcome the publication of the Scottish Government’s consultation on diet, activity and healthy weight.

“Our Fellows and Members treat the consequences of obesity and poor diet on a daily basis. We know that the causes and treatment of obesity are varied and complex, meaning a simple answer to the problem does not exist.  Prevention is both better for patients and more cost-effective than treatment, but we also need to assist those who are already obese or overweight.

“It is encouraging that the Scottish Government intends to take action in areas such as such as reduced food portion or pack sizes, and stronger controls on price promotions and advertising.

“What is clear is that a comprehensive and collaborative approach is required to tackle all the elements in the longer term.

“It is important to close the gap between those on higher and those on lower incomes, and improve the social and economic conditions in which people live in order to tackle poor health.

“We very much hope that the consultation will result in the bold action required to tackle the problems that exist.”
