Commenting on the publication of Professor Sir Harry Burns’ Review of Targets and Indicators in health and social care in Scotland, Professor Derek Bell, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, said:

"The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh welcomes the publication of this important review into targets in Scotland. The review recognises that the targets currently used have helped to deliver improvements in performance in a number of areas and we must continue to ensure that any new targets are effective for patients.

"The report also acknowledges that there is scope to improve the current system of targets and I am pleased that the review suggests that we take a whole-system approach, involving all those healthcare professionals and other staff who deliver care.

"We must ensure that any new approach to targets and indicators focuses on patient outcomes across the whole system of care making the best use of our resources."
