RCPE Trainees and Members’ Committee (T&MC): Profiles

Office Bearers

Dr Marion Slater, Co-Chair (and Co-opted Member)

Position: SpR Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics Dr Marion Slater
Specific areas of interest: Medical Education and Politics, SAS doctors
T&MC representation: Internal
T&MC
Council
President’s Advisory Group
  External
Academy Trainee Doctors’ Group
Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and Faculties in Scotland
Reason for joining T&MC: I used to think that I was powerless to influence issues affecting junior doctors and their training. Through my involvement with the RCPE T&MC over the past 3 years I have seen that it really is possible to effect change particularly when working with motivated colleagues such as those in the College.  I have been inspired by the commitment the RCPE has to trainees and SAS doctors in providing top quality educational opportunities and in representing us in discussions with other bodies in medical education and politics. I hope to continue the excellent work of my predecessors by continuing to focus on you the medical students, Associates and Members that we represent. Remember, this is your committee and your views and opinions do matter to us so please get in touch if you have something to say or want to get involved!

Reason for joining T&MC: Like others, in the early stages of my career, I did not realise that trainees played such an active role in shaping the training we receive. The debacle of the introduction of MMC and the dreaded MTAS prompted me to get involved to try to influence some of those making decisions about my training. It is only really in recent years, in particular, since joining RCPE T+MC that I have understood better the influence we have. Trainees' thoughts are actively sought by the bodies responsible for organising and monitoring training programmes, so it is essential that we get involved in order to feedback what works and what doesn't. Our views matter and should be heard.

Reason for joining T&MC:

Reason for joining: I am taking a rather convoluted career path but as a subsequence of such I have seen and met many doctors both here and abroad who face the challenges of training in medicine. Given the ever increasing breadth of modern medicine and recent difficult financial times putting pressures on health systems (and also after a gentle nudge in the committee’s direction by a member!) I thought this would be a good time to contribute to a group that I have learned has proven history in helping trainees through the minefield.  Hopefully my contribution will play a small part in the continual improvement of world class training.

T&MC representation: Internal
T&MC (Secretary)
Council

General Internal Medicine Specialist Advisory Committee
Reason for joining T&MC: I was caught up in MTAS as an SAS grade trying to go back into training.  I became frustrated at the way they "system" was ignoring the effects of itself on promising doctors and the low morale it caused.  There was a general feeling that as individuals we were helpless, and I saw becoming involved with the RCPE as a way of helping to regain some control of juniors’ fates.  I chose to do this (through what I have increasingly become to see as OUR college) as I felt that this was an issue of education and professionalism, rather than contractual.
