How to Enrol With JRCPTB

Membership: pre- and post MRCP(UK)

Introduction

Upon being newly appointed to a Specialty Training post in the UK, all Trainee Doctors should receive an appointment letter from their Postgraduate Deanery in which it is stated that all Trainee Doctors pursuing a specialty career in Medicine are required to enrol with the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians’ Training Board (JRCPTB).  Due to a lack of standardisation between Postgraduate Deaneries, however, some appointment letters may not, at this time, include a statement regarding enrolling with JRCPTB. Please note that enrolment with JRCPTB is mandatory if you wish to enter Specialty Training in Medicine andthat it applies to all Specialist Training (ST) posts (specialties and Core Medical Training), to Fixed Term Specialist Training Appointments (FTSTAs) and Locum Appointments–Training (LATs) if this experience is to count towards Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).

What is the JRCPTB?

JRCPTB LogoAll medical training in the UK is governed by the principles of good medical education and training developed by the General Medical Council (GMC).

However, the curricula and standards within individual training programmes are developed by Medical Royal Colleges and approved by PMETB.  For the medical specialties, the curricula and associated assessment frameworks are developed by the three Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK (Edinburgh, Glasgow and London) through the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians’ Training Board (JRCPTB). The JRCPTB has taken over the role previously fulfilled by the Joint Committee on Higher Medical Training (JCHMT).

Why do I have to enrol?

Registration for Specialist Training with JRCPTB is mandatory under the NHS Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) Guide to Specialty Training (the Gold Guide). Enrolment with and complete payment of fees to JRCPTB is required before the JRCPTB will be able to complete the paperwork recommending you for CCT.

How do I enrol?

All Trainees undertaking Specialty Training in medicine should enrol directly with JRCTPB and can choose to pay their Training fees by two methods –

  • as a one-off (upfront) payment to JRCPTB (either £306 or £765, depending upon duration of training – please see flowchart and fee structure below) OR
  • Trainees can choose to off-set their obligations in training fees by paying this in a series of fixed instalments through their annual membership of one of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (thus spreading the cost of training and enabling Trainees to access a http://www.rcpe.ac.uk/about/join/index.phphost of membership benefits through their membership subscription whilst doing so). Details of RCPE subscription rates, starting from as little as £30 pro rata, can be accessed here.  In addition, membership subscription fees are tax deductible (offering reductions of up to 40%), providing both a cash flow and financial benefit.

Those Trainees wishing to pay their training fees in instalments through College membership will be required to pay a first instalment of £153 to JRCPTB in advance, immediately upon enrolment with JRCPTB.  The easiest method of doing this is to pay by credit card when enrolling online. If you would prefer to pay by credit card over the phone please call the JRCPTB Enrolments Team on 0203-075-1283; in addition, if wishing to pay by cheque please send JRCPTB a cheque immediately after enrolling online. Please note your full name, date of birth and GMC number on the back of the cheque and send your cheque to JRCPTB, 5 St Andrews Place, Regent's Park, London, NW1 4LB. Payment must be received within 30 days of the enrolment being submitted.

JRCPTB will then process your registration and advise your chosen College that you have been enrolled and wish to pay the remainder of your training fees through that College.

Your chosen College will then contact you shortly thereafter in order to enrol you as a College member. In the case of the RCPE, we would collect your first pro-rata RCPE membership subscription fee in advance, but we would not then collect the next training instalment of £153, on behalf of JRCPTB, until the next 1 July (the annual renewal date for RCPE membership subscriptions) along with that year’s annual membership subscription fee.
