Remote and Rural Medicine

Remote and Rural MedicineThe RCPE has commissioned a series of commentaries on the future of remote and rural medicine in Scotland. The commentaries provide perspectives from physicians, surgeons, a GP, an anaesthetist, a Medical Director and a member of the public who has been actively involved in campaigning for rural services.

The commentaries do not represent RCPE policy, but have instead been commissioned to facilitate further discussion and understanding about the practical issues involved in delivering healthcare in remote and rural areas in Scotland. The articles are also intended to enable frontline clinicians and a member of the community to have their views aired at a national level (copies of the publication have been distributed to MSPs and decision-makers in Scotland).

In parallel to this, the RCPE has also published two further documents intended to enhance understanding of the issues involved –

  • the RCPE has obtained permission from NHS Tayside to publish the report of the independent review which led to the retention of routine medical services at Stracathro Hospital in 2001 (the review was jointly carried out by representatives of RCPE and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh)

  • the RCPE commissioned a larger review article from Australia to provide a parallel perspective on how this matter has been approached in a country with far greater remote and rural land tracts than Scotland, and suggests ways in which Scotland might learn from the Australian experience.
