Ralph Shabetai was born in Manchester, UK and studied Medicine in Edinburgh, qualifying in 1952 with what was then known as the Triple Qualification, followed three years later with Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. In that same year he moved to the USA working in Cincinnati, Kentucky and Texas. In 1976 he was recruited to San Diego as Professor of Medicine and Chief of Cardiology in the VA hospital as well as being Associate Chief of Cardiology at the teaching programme at UCSD.

He was a brilliant teacher and role model as well as being a highly skilled cardiologist and researcher and writer with the monograph The Pericardium published in 1981 followed by a new edition in 2003, 73 chapters in textbooks and 115 papers on his original research. However, medicine was not his only love. He was deeply interested in and fascinated by poetry, literature and classical music- a well-rounded renaissance man like many who qualified in Edinburgh at the same time as him.

He is survived by his wife Estelle, three childen and six grandchilden and countless ex-students and trainees who were inspired and modelled by him.
