Plans to reduce ‘boarding’ in Scotland’s hospitals

A plan has been put in place to address unnecessary patient moves in hospitals.

A new collaborative work programme between the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) and NHS Scotland will address the practice – known as ‘boarding’.

New UK-wide medical guidance published today will advise that by implementing a simple system of e-alerts, amongst other measures, the NHS could turn around a 40 year high level of patient deaths caused by acute kidney injury (AKI) and save up to 12,000 lives per year.

Doctors will meet today at an event convened by the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) [1] to consider how to improve diagnosis of patients with dementia, as it is estimated that up to 50% of patients with dementia in Scottish hospitals go undiagnosed.

New data produced by the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) has shown that hospitals, which are regularly under pressure during the winter months, are now routinely transferring patients around the hospital all year round to cope with the number of medical patients. This is inappropriate, places patients at risk and is difficult for the medical teams caring for them.

Medical Experts Call on Scottish & UK Governments to Introduce National Screening Programme to Cut Stroke Deaths

A high-level meeting of over 120 leading stroke specialists from around the UK, convened by the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE), has recommended that the Scottish and UK Governments should urgently introduce national screening programmes aimed at reducing the number of strokes and premature deaths caused by stroke.
