Dr Neil Dewhurst, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, said,

“Earlier this month an intentionally provocative commentary on women doctors practising in the NHS was published in a national popular newspaper. Unfortunately, this single article has subsequently attracted a disproportionate amount of coverage. As a College, we found the comments contained within that article to be offensive, demeaning and completely out of place in today’s NHS. Rather than dignify the views expressed with a detailed response, we would simply state that we do not believe that gender influences a doctor’s competence, value to the NHS or to patients. To suggest otherwise is grossly misleading and does a great disservice to doctors and other health professionals”.
