Commenting on the UK Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths and Morbidity report published earlier today [1], Prof Derek Bell, President, Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, said,

“It is encouraging that a decrease in maternal deaths in the UK has been experienced and parents to be should be reminded that maternal deaths are very rare. However, the report has found that there is scope to reduce maternal deaths further, particularly those caused by indirect medical complications including sepsis (severe infection) and flu. Earlier diagnosis and treatment of sepsis, including early senior review by consultants, is vital, as is the need to encourage more pregnant women to receive the flu vaccination. Improvements also need to be made in the provision of critical care for pregnant women who become unwell. The RCPE will be hosting a small medical group to explore how we can increase awareness and alert all medical staff to managing acute illness in mothers .”
