Background: Good Management Good Records (GMGR) was initially published in December 2004. It includes advice and guidance on records management, including the minimum retention periods for different types of records.

GMGR is now being revised and extended to include guidance on the management of records by those working under contract to the HSC.

The guidelines contained in GMGR apply to HSC records of all types (including records of HSC patients treated on behalf of the HSC in the private healthcare sector, or receiving social care services contracted for (procured by) HSC bodies) regardless of the media on which they are held.

Stakeholders were given the opportunity to comment on the revised guidance.
