Background: The draft section 60 Order makes provision in respect of postgraduate medical education and training, the General Practitioner Register and the Specialist Register. It also makes transitional provisions and consequential amendments to primary and subordinate legislation arising from the wind-up of PMETB and the revocation of the General and Specialist Medical practice (Education, Training and Qualifications) Order 2003.

The draft Order of Council makes provision in respect of criteria for eligibility for entry onto the General Practitioner and the Specialist Registers, recognised specialist qualifications, acquired rights of general practitioners in the UK, specialties in which Certificates of Completion of Training are awarded and minimum training periods

This paper considers the assimilation of the statutory functions of the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) into the General Medical Council (GMC).
