Background: This consultation was an opportunity for all stakeholders in the postgraduate medical education sector to confirm that the proposed Quality Assurance Framework (QAF) recognises their responsibilities and addresses their Quality Assurance (QA) needs so that we can improve the overall standard of postgraduate medical education in the UK.

The consultation sought views on the following topics:

The QAF and the key elements within it:

- standards - standards for traininers;
- the evidence base;
- national trainee and trainer surveys - certain aspects only;
- visits - mode, methods, judgements;
- responses to concerns;
- approvals - curriculum review protocol;
- principles for deaneries to demonstrate their QM.
