Policy responses and statements
Background: The purpose of the consultation process was to give a range of people drawn from all parts of Scotland an opportunity to comment on the issues around, and influence the development of the standards. In 2001, the Clinical Standards Board for Scotland (CSBS, one of the organisations drawn together to form NHS QIS) produced Standards for Breast Cancer, Colorectal Cancer, Gynaecological (Ovarian) Cancer and Lung Cancer. The core standards draw together common elements of service provision covered by the original standards, and have updated these in light of developments in the service. Revisions of the four original tumour-site specific cancer standards will be carried out by NHS QIS later in 2006. In addition, there have been significant developments in cancer services over the last 4 years, particularly the establishment and ongoing development of the 3 regional cancer networks in the north of Scotland (NOSCAN), south-east Scotland (SCAN) and west of Scotland (WOSCAN). It was therefore important that any work undertaken by NHS QIS in relation to cancer services, including the potential revision of clinical standards, reflected such developments in services, relevant policy initiatives and legislation.
