Background: This consultation paper is about the generic standards which PMETB proposes to set for specialist training and educational programmes in postgraduate medicine. The standards will cover all postgraduate training programmes after the end of the Foundation years, for all specialties, including general practice. Any additional provision of training outside NHS institutions, but forming part of a programme arranged/approved by the postgraduate dean (eg in independent sector treatment centres) will be subject to these standards. Standards for Foundation programmes are now being designed jointly by PMETB and the GMC. The standards are designed to run alongside the Standards for Curricula (March 2005) and the Principles for an Assessment System for Postgraduate Medical Training (September 2004).
