Responding to the publication of the searchable database showing payments made by the pharmaceutical industry to healthcare professionals and organisations in the UK, Prof Derek Bell, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, said:

“The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh welcomes the publication of the database detailing payments made to healthcare professionals in the UK from the pharmaceutical industry.

“Medical professionals provide invaluable input to the pharmaceutical industry on research and the development of new medicines, and the database is a positive step forward in ensuring this work is transparent and accessible to the public. The way that the industry interacts with healthcare systems and professionals is crucial in growing confidence in the sector.

“While this is a positive move, further development of work in this area is required; we would urge the Association of British Pharmaceutical Industries (ABPI) to remove the opt out for clinicians to improve the openness of database.”
