Responding to the announcement that a number of NHS Trusts in England are to be placed into financial special measures, including Barts Health and North Bristol, Prof Derek Bell, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, said:

“Today’s news that more NHS Trusts are to be put into special measures is disappointing to hear. This is happening in an increasing number of areas, and we need a greater understanding of the wider collective problems Trusts are facing rather than merely seeking to impose solutions.

“It is also important that decisions regarding special measures are made transparently and that the impact on staff in affected sites is considered.

"It is not clear that greater use of external consultants represents good value or has had the desired impact of ensuring good and safe care to patients”.
