The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) will today (4 October 2011) call on the NHS (throughout Scotland and the UK) to develop more flexible working patterns in order to respond to the rapidly increasing number of female medical graduates and doctors, and to ensure that the provision of patient care is maintained.

A new study has found that 90% of doctors who responded to a survey believe that patient safety throughout Scotland and the UK is compromised in August when the latest intake of medical trainee doctors start their training posts in the NHS on the same day nationally, and doctors already in training rotate into other positions.

In an unprecedented step, the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) has issued a warning that Scotland is in danger of creating a generation of inadequately trained doctors and, in turn, potentially compromising patient safety unless urgent action is taken by the incoming Scottish Government.

A leading UK research scientist will today (10 March 2011) present data showing that the Scottish and UK Governments could save “significant resources” by adopting a more targeted approach to screening for the risk of heart disease and diabetes than the increasingly favoured governmental strategies of universal health checks.
