MONRO, Alexander, secundus [1733 - 1817]

1.

Lectures on anatomy. 7 vol. Edinburgh [after 1750?] 8o.
Wanting vols 1 and 2. With engraved title-pages. Ex Duncan collection. May be by Monro primus.
[No doubt about Monro secundus and unequivocal evidence for after 1783 (Vol 6, p.1747).
From relation to Wellcome HS3618, Nos 1789/90. - DT]

2.

Lectures on physiology. Edinburgh [after 1750?] 4o. 1812.
[Monro secundus but internal evidence points to not later than 1765/6. The completecourse, not just physiology. A William Moncrieff, Elder brother of John, took MD in 1768. This would fit. - DT]

3.

Lectures on physiology. 2 vol. Edinburgh [after 1750?] 8o.
With engraved title-pages. Ex Duncan collection. May be by Monro primus.
[Without any question Monro primus. After 1737 (Vol 2 p.33). Probably the whole series of 12 volumes (see 4, 5(1&2), 12(1-7)) is uniform, say 1738-9. - DT]

4.

Lectures on the muscles. Edinburgh [after 1750?] 8o.
With an engraved title-page. Ex Duncan collection. May be by Monro primus.
[Monro primus; part of series comprising 5, 12 & 3. - DT]

5.

History of anatomy. 2 vol. Edinburgh [after 1750?] 8o.
With engraved title-pages. Ex Duncan collection. May be by Monro primus.
[Again without question, Monro primus. History of Anatomy dated mid or late 1730's. - DT]

6.

Lectures on anatomy and physiology. 4 vol. Edinburgh [c.1770?] 8o.
Together with "Part of a lecture given by Tho. Inness on Circulation of the Blood", written in a different hand.
[Impossible to date, but apparently identical with 10, and so 1774/5 is reasonable. - DT]

7.

Lectures on anatomy, no.s 80-114, followed by parts of a printed work on anatomy.
[Taken by John Goodsir of Largo?] Edinburgh, 1770 8o.
[??1770 - different from E.U. 575 D - closely related to E.U. Vet.Lib. Mss 1 2 and R. C.S. Eng. 276.9.66-73. Probably 1768 or -9, bought or copied in 1770. - DT]

8.

Lectures on anatomy. 3 vol. Edinburgh, 1770-71 4o.
[Written by Thos. Davison. The surgical part may be 1771, but the rest is very similar to 2 (above) and may be an updated copy. - DT]

9.

Lectures on anatomy. Edinburgh [1770?] 4o.
[After 1774. Appears to be same as 10 and 13. - DT]

10.

Lectures on anatomy. 6 vol. Edinburgh, 1774-75 4o.
Wanting vols 3 and 4. With the signature of James Hamilton the younger. From p.1012 in vol 6 to the end, the subject is Surgery.
[Identical with E.U. gen. 569-73 which bears same date. - DT]

11.

Lectures on anatomy given by Alexander Monro secundus and Alexander Monro tertius. Taken by James Kier. Edinburgh, 1801-02 8o.
In shorthand. Monro secundus and Monro tertius were joint Professors of Anatomy from 1798 to 1808.

12.

Lectures on wounds (2 vols); tumours (3 vols); operations (1 vol); bandages (1 vol). 7 numbered vols. Edinburgh [after 1777?] 8o.
With engraved title-pages. Ex Duncan collection. Monro secundus was the first Professor of Surgical Science in 1777. Note by A Duncan, 1 May 1807 and Codicil, 13 May 1812, about the legacy of Ms Lecture notes.
[These are the lectures on Wounds, on Tumours, on Operations, of Surgery and on Bandages of Monro primus. Together with 3 (1&2), 5 (1&2) and 4 they form the bulk of his course on uniform binding. Date mid to late 1730's. - DT]

13.

Lectures on surgery. [Taken by B Lindsay?] Edinburgh [after 1777?] 4o.
[Multiple checks show identity with 10. Thus Monro secundus 1774/5. - DT]

14.

Lectures on surgery. Edinburgh [after 1777?] 4o.
[Monro primus, closely related, along with 15, to 12 (1-7) any one could be a paraphrase of either of the others, but only the 12 (1-7) series has the long Latin quotes. Fair amount of mis-binding. (Fractures 1-4; Tumours 3-6; Fractures 7-8; Tumours 9-112; Tumours 1-2; Fractures 3-6; Tumours 7-8; Fractures 9-26). - DT]

15.

Lectures on surgery. Edinburgh [after 1777?] 4o.
[Again, Monro primus, compare 12 (1) and thus ?1 735-40. Both 14 and 15 contain
"wounds" and "tumours" and therefore ??etatus. See "Life" (Edin Univ J 1954). - DT]

1.

Lectures on surgery. 2 vols. Edinburgh [c. 1803/4?] 8o.

[Two vols. little doubt that these are notes from lectures delivered by John Thomson (see especially Vol.1 p.118) second vol mainly for V.D. - DT 6/76]

2.

Lectures on surgery. Edinburgh, 1804 8o.
May be by Monro secundus.
