Daniel Rutherford (1749-1819) was a physician and chemist born in Edinburgh.He studied at the University of Edinburgh under William Cullen and Joseph Black.He obtained his MD in 1772 and in 1776 received his licence from the RoyalCollege of Physicians. He became a fellow of the College one year later andwas elected president between 1796 and 1798. In 1786 Rutherford had succeededJohn Hope as Professor of botany at the University of Edinburgh and Keeperof the Royal Botanic Garden at Edinburgh.
