In order to promote understanding of UK governance and assurance relating to electronic health records research, we present and discuss the role of the Independent Scientific Advisory Committee (ISAC) for MHRA database research in evaluating protocols proposing the use of the Clinical Practice Research Datalink. We describe the development of the Committee’s activities between 2006 and 2015, alongside growth in data linkage and wider national electronic health records programmes, including the application and assessment processes, and our approach to undertaking this work.

The rapid growth of noncommunicable diseases represents a formidable global health challenge. Here we use type 2 diabetes as a case study to illustrate the rise of noncommunicable diseases and call attention to the important role of primary care systems in addressing these diseases in low- and middle-income countries. Comprehensive screening for diabetes should be implemented through primary care systems to increase early detection of prediabetes and undiagnosed diabetes – a first step to diabetes prevention and management.

Background and Aims: The utility of B-type natriuretic peptide as a screening test for heart failure has been proven in a number of clinical trials. The aims of this study were to assess the utility of the measurement of B-type natriuretic peptide in a ‘real life’ setting and to estimate the potential costs of implementing its use in primary care in Scotland.
