Speaker: Professor Andrew Lees

The author of 'Naked Lunch' and 'Junkie', William Burroughs might not seem like the natural inspiration in the search for a treatment for Parkinson's disease, but his influence in the research of Professor Andrew Lees has proved fruitful. With the philosophy of Burroughs guiding him, Professor Lees has explored the Amazonian rainforest in search of cures, using methods of self-experimentation of which the experimental writer would surely have approved. Professor Lees has achieved international recognition for his work in Parkinson's disease and abnormal movement disorders, but he also is a strong advocate of more imagination in medical research and shaking up the established system.

This lecture has been arranged and funded by the Edinburgh Branch of Parkinson’s UK, the Lothian Parkinson’s Service Advisory Group, the MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.

The event finishes at 9pm.
