Biography

John Strong studied medicine at Trinity College, Dublin, before serving with the Royal Army Medical Corps in India and Burma. On his return he recommenced training in London before being appointed Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Physician at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh.  He developed the specialty of endocrinology and established the Metabolic Unit to carry out the complex investigations that were performed inadequately in busy general medical wards. Professor Strong served the College as Vice President from 1976 to 1978 and as President from 1979 to 1981.
