Biography

James Lind was born, probably in Edinburgh, on 7 May 1736. In 1766, Lind was an East Indiaman and visited China as a surgeon. He graduated MD from Edinburgh in 1768 with a dissertation on a fever in Bengal in 1762. His thesis was published in 1768. In 1769, Lind observed the transit of Venus at Hawkhill, near Edinburgh and sent an account of his observations to the Royal Society. His account was read before the Royal Society. In 1770, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Lind was the first to discover the true latitude of Islay in the Hebrides. He accompanied Joseph Banks on his voyage to Iceland in 1772.

Having reached an apex in his illustrious career, Lind was appointed physician-in-ordinary to the household of George III. Although it seems doubtful Lind ever developed a private practice. Lind married Ann Elizabeth Mealy in London on 7 November 1778. Lind died in London on 17 October 1812.
