Who Wants to Know? – The Challenge of Freedom of Information

We are delighted that Mr Kevin Dunion OBE, has agreed to give the College’s Annual Charity Christmas Lecture, organised by the Trainees and Members' Committee of the College. Mr Kevin Dunion was appointed as the first Scottish Information Commissioner in February 2003.

His appointment by HM The Queen, on the nomination of the Scottish Parliament, ran for five years. In February 2008, Kevin was reappointed for a second, and final term, for four years until 2012. Since the Act came fully into force on 1 January 2005, Kevin has taken over 800 formal decisions in respect of appeals. Some of these decisions have been high profile such as requiring the disclosure of MSPs' expenses claims,(an area of significant public interest given the manner in which the issue of politicians’ expenses dominated the political headlines at a Scottish and UK level in 2009), the publication of surgeons' mortality rates (the first such comprehensive disclosure anywhere in the world), and the release of an entire PFI contract for the building and maintenance of the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

All proceeds from his lecture will be given to his chosen charity which is “PENUMBRA”. One of Scotland’s leading mental health organisations, providing a wide range of support services for adults and young people.

The evening will commence at 6.15pm with mince pies & wine being served. His talk will start at 7pm with his lecture finishing at approximately 8pm.

If you wish to attend the lecture and/or make a donation, please complete the enclosed form and return to Mrs Anne Fairbairn, Education and Standards Department, Royal College of Physicians, 9 Queen Street, Edinburgh, EH2 1JQ before Tuesday 8th December 2009. Cheques should be made payable to “The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh”.
