Responding to the Royal College of Nursing’s ‘Unheeded warnings: health care in crisis’ report, Prof Derek Bell, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, said:

“The Royal College of Nursing’s report raises a number of serious issues affecting nursing in the NHS, which will ultimately impact upon our patients as well as other healthcare professionals.

"Similar challenges exist across the NHS that must be addressed now to create a sustainable workforce for the future.

"Creating an environment where staff feel valued is essential to retaining and attracting a world class workforce.

“We reiterate our call for safe staffing levels for all professions within hospital settings alongside improved workforce planning to address recruitment and retention challenges.
