Commenting on the Scottish International Medical Training Fellowship programme, Professor Derek Bell, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, said:

“We welcome the creation of the Scottish International Medical Training Fellowship programme, which brings together existing medical fellowship programmes, and the intention to double the number of trainee doctors over the next two years.

“Doctors from overseas make a significant and positive contribution to the functioning of our NHS and we must continue to recognise this.

“As a College, we will continue to work closely with the Scottish Government and NHS Scotland to ensure that we fill vacancies with the best possible candidates, as well as working with the UK Government to ensure that trainees from overseas have access to visas to enable them to train in our NHS.”
