Methodology for convening RCPE Consensus ConferencesThe RCPE is the only UK College of Physicians which organises Consensus Conferences to address areas of uncertainty within a particular area of clinical practice by reviewing the international evidence in relation to four or five specific issues defined in the form of key questions. The RCPE has developed an evidence-based, multi-professional consensus methodology which involves
The conferences are generally held over two days during which the panel reviews all the evidence (background papers, invited speakers' presentations and poster presentations) before drafting the consensus statement which is debated by the full conference and amended to reflect discussion. In line with the College’s Ethical Sponsorship Policy any sponsors providing financial support towards the administration of the conference have no role in programme planning or in the consensus statement process. In addition, all invited participants are asked to make comprehensive declarations of interests as they relate to the topic of the conference. The final consensus statement is widely disseminated by publication in relevant medical journals and on the internet. Although the consensus statements are developed within the context of the UK health service, they are based on international evidence and health care professionals from all parts of the world can access them via the College website.
