MRCP(UK) Examination Components

The MRCP(UK) Examination consists of three components:

MRCP(UK) Part 1

Part 1 is the entry-level examination accessible to doctors with a minimum of 12 months' postgraduate experience in medical employment. It covers a broad range of topics to ensure the level of knowledge is appropriate to physicians at the beginning of postgraduate training. MRCP(UK) Part 2 

The MRCP(UK) Part 2 Written Examination can be taken by physicians in training who have passed the MRCP(UK) Part 1 Examination. It builds on the knowledge assessed in Part 1 and tests the acquisition of a representative sample of medical knowledge, skills, and behaviour as specified in the UK Specialty Training Curriculum for Core Medical Training / Curriculum for Internal Medicine. Further information on this can be found on the MRCP's Part 2 hub here.

PACES23

PACES23 is coming: The new name for PACES 2020 | MRCPUK

The MRCP(UK) Part 2 Clinical Examination (Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills - PACES) is designed to test the clinical knowledge and skills of trainee doctors who hope to enter higher specialist training (ST3). You must have passed the Part 1 written exam within the last 7 years before taking PACES. The exam sets rigorous standards to ensure your competence across a range of skills and you are ready to provide a high standard of care to patients. Further information on this can be found on the MRCP's PACES hub here.

Successful completion of the entire three-part examination is required before you can start specialist internal medicine training in the UK. Guidance regarding the best time to sit each part of the examination is available. Candidates can choose to sit all three parts of the examination through the Edinburgh, Glasgow, or London Colleges who operate examination centres throughout the UK and overseas.

Examination Centres

Part 1 and Part 2 Written Examinations are held in an examination hall or online. The Edinburgh College hosts PACES centres in various locations throughout Scotland, England, Wales and, on occasion, Northern Ireland.
