Mentoring guide

RCPE assigns a mentor to new MTI trainees to support them during their post. The mentor is usually a senior Fellow of the College and/or member of our International Development Group. The College passes contact details to both parties and ensures that the mentor is familiar with the mentee’s medical training to date.

There is no formal procedure but we recommend that during initial contact the mentee’s needs are discussed as well as the expectations of both parties, including frequency of contact.

Possible topics for discussion:

• Short and long term career goals

• Skills to learn or improve

• Professional networks

Mentors may find it helpful to agree short and long-term goals for the mentee and create a checklist to refer back to in subsequent discussions.

Discussions should remain confidential.
