RCPE SUPPORT FOR MINIMUM PRICING

The Scottish Government has brought forward a range of policy proposals aimed at reducing the burden of disease caused by excessive consumption of alcohol. These proposals include the introduction of a minimum price for a unit of alcohol, an evidence-based measure which has been advocated by the College both individually and through the medical advocacy group on alcohol, Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP), which published a highly influential report on the link between alcohol and price in late 2007. This proposal will be published as a Bill in the Scottish Parliament in November 2009.

Whilst the College is apolitical, and engages with politicians on a cross-party basis, Council of RCPE has recently agreed to support this policy measure and the wider Alcohol Bill as the Bill makes its way through the legislative process.

We would encourage Fellows and Members in Scotland and other visitors to our website to contact their MSP in support of this important Bill.
