College News - October 2012Clinical Fellowship (Acute Medicine)The RCPE is seeking applications for a Clinical Fellowship which is part of a collaborative project with the Scottish Government Health Department to develop standards and improve workforce projections in acute medicine in Scotland. The post will be based in the revised Standards Unit of the College and is part funded by the Scottish Government. It will be available for 2-3 years and supports a work programme that is suitable for applicants considering a MPhil, MD or PhD from a Scottish University. Applicants should have MRCP(UK) and be in a training post in a medical specialty at ST3-4 level. A full CV including a supporting statement of no longer than 500 words and with 2 clinical referees should be e-mailed to the College (e.tait@rcpe.ac.uk) by no later than 12.00 Noon on Monday 12th November 2012. MRCP(UK) and SCE Fees 2013After much deliberation, the MRCP(UK) management board has agreed to restrain the next annual increase in fees for the MRCP(UK) Diploma examinations to a level that is in line with inflation and to freeze the fees for the Specialty Certificate Examinations (SCEs). Revalidation to start in December 2012The Department of Health has, this morning, announced that revalidation will start in December 2012. This is the process by which all doctors in the UK who are licensed with the General Medical Council (GMC) will regularly be required to demonstrate that they are up to date and fit to practise. Commenting on the revalidation announcement, Dr Neil Dewhurst, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, said, “The College welcomes the announcement regarding the enactment of revalidation; if implemented appropriately, revalidation will protect patients and support the continuous development of doctors. The Secretary of State now brings the period of uncertainty and delay to an end and Fellows and Members are reminded of the support available through the College. MRCP(UK) Part 2 Clinical Examination (PACES) - Information now available about Fast TrackFurther details are now available about Fast Track for MRCP(UK) Part 2 Clinical Examination (PACES) running in UK centres in January to April 2013. This is an opportunity for any candidate applying for an ST3 post in Spring 2013 to request to sit PACES again within the same PACES assessment period should they be unsuccessful in their initial attempt. Candidates should be aware there will be limited places and it is unlikely that all applicants can be accommodated. Further details on how and when candidates can apply for Fast Track are now available on the website: Bike RacksThere are 10 new bicycle racks at the front door of No 8 Queen Street for those who wish to cycle to the College. If these are full then there are also alternatives in the basement of No 11 Queen Street (Key available from Reception). There are also 3 in the Car Park at the rear of the Building in North East Thistle Street Lane.
