College News - March 201221 March 2012 Health and Social Care Bill: updateThe Health and Social Care Bill overcame its last hurdle after passing through the Houses of Lords and Commons will be enacted into legislation following Royal Assent before the Easter recess. Dr Neil Dewhurst, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE), said, “There has clearly been much difference of opinion and debate regarding the content and potential impact of the Health Bill. While the RCPE was not entirely in agreement with the Bill in its final form, and was unable to formally support it, we recognise that the Bill has gone through the democratic process and that the medical profession, collectively, has done much to improve the Bill in comparison to its original draft. As a College we will work positively to support implementation for the benefit of patients”.
