UK research trials are on the verge of extinction

RCPE Fellows Honoured in New Year Honours List

College President Professor Sir Neil Douglas, MD, DSc, HonMD (StA), FRCP Edin, FRCPLond has been awarded a knighthood for "services to medicine", but these extend far beyond the walls and interests of the College.

He did his pre-clinical studies in St Andrews, Scotland then his clinical studies in Edinburgh where he graduated in 1973 after a distinguished undergraduate career.

He specialised in chest medicine and won international fame and recognition through his pioneering work on sleep apnoea, having literally hundreds of papers published as well as contributions to textbooks.

Between 1975-83 he was a Lecturer in Medicine, University of Edinburgh, between 1983-91 Senior Lecturer / Honorary Consultant, 1991-95 Reader in Medicine and since 1995 Professor of Respiratory Medicine.

His contribution to the College has been outstanding. He has served it as Director of Continuing Medical Education, Member of the Library Committee, Dean, Vice President and, since 2003, President. He is now the longest serving President since Sir Alexander Dick in the 1760s.

He has served on the Education Committee of the General Medical Council, been Vice-Chairman of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, Chairman of the Review Group of MTAS, and a member of the Joint Consultants Committee to name but a few.

He has been awarded Honorary or ad eundem Fellowships of the American College of Physicians; Royal Colleges of Physicians of Australia, Glasgow, Ireland; Colleges of Physicians of Singapore and South Africa; and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh

His wife is an Edinburgh general practitioner. They have a son and a daughter.
