College News - July 2008RCPE Press Release: Health Benefits From Scotland’s Smoking BanRoyal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh welcomes the public recognition this week by the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine of the evidence from Scotland of the major health benefits of a change in smoking policy. Professor Neil Douglas, President of the College and a respiratory physician in Edinburgh, said: “Smoking continues to be one of the most powerful influences on the health of Scots, and this research demonstrates the very rapid positive effect of discouraging this dangerous and addictive habit. It is now not acceptable to smoke in public places, and we are seeing the health benefits. It is important to maintain efforts to support people to stop smoking and to discourage our young people from taking up the habit. Plans to develop licensing schemes to enforce the law on age of purchase and efforts to remove tobacco products from open display in shops and supermarkets will all contribute to this end and should be supported." This is a key appointment and we hope physicians with an interest in audit and clinical effectiveness will consider it carefully. Added 28 July 2008 RCPE comment on plans for revalidation of doctors in UKThe RCPE has issued the following comment on the principles of revalidation announced by the DoH earlier today Prof Neil Douglas, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE), said, “We welcome the principles of the plans set out today for the process of revalidation. These plans will enable doctors to prove that they keep their skills up-to-date and will importantly reassure patients that all doctors will be in a position to provide the best possible level of care. “We look forward to working with the GMC in developing the clinical standards which doctors will be required to attain in order to be revalidated and the mechanisms to support doctors through this process.” ENDS Contact: Graeme McAlister on 0131-247-3693 or 07808-939395 Hyperlinks are supplied below to - Added 23 July 2008 2008 edition of the "Gold Guide" for specialty training now availableThe 2008 edition of A Reference Guide for Postgraduate Specialty Training in the UK (the "Gold Guide") and its Core Training Supplement are now available.
